LASFS Weekly Meeting — September 17, 2026

Invited Participants: David Ritter and Sara Light-Waller

David Ritter presented a history of the founding of the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society, with Sara Light-Waller participating in the discussion and providing additional historical context and answering questions.

In 1930s Los Angeles, a small group of passionate readers began meeting in living rooms and borrowed back rooms, laying the foundation for LASFS. When fandom was young and the mimeograph was king, writers, artists, letterhacks, and eccentric personalities of every sort gathered here.

This presentation explored the founding of the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society, its first official meeting in October 1934, and some of its earliest members—including the father of a current LASFS member.
